At Grizzly Creek Lodge we fish for Lake trout, Arctic grayling and Northern pike. We are catch-and-release only except those we keep for shore lunches.
We normally just measure the length of the fish in the water and release them without too much handling. We are also a barbless hook camp and have found that very few fish
are lost because of this. As you can see by the photo albums we do allow guests to weigh their fish and get pictures but 90% are never handled.
Both of the main lakes we fish (lower and upper Toobally Lakes) have lots of large shoals or reefs in the middle of the lakes where the water gets very shallow (3 to 7 feet). This is great for fly fishing Lake trout in early June as the fish are up there feeding. In late June and early July the Lake trout move off these shoals into deeper water and the Northern pike move onto them.
We also have a hike-in lake that has Northern pike only (large ones, 20+ pounds) - Jacks Lake is a moderate 45-minute hike. In 2009 we are opening up 2 new hike-in lakes. We also fish the lower Smith River below the lower lake (excellent for fly fishing grayling) and the upper Smith between the 2 lakes.
Fishing guests will see and fish both lakes and lodges. We normally spend 2 or 3 days out of each week at the upper lake depending on the wishes of the guests.
Fishing licences are sold at the lodge, as are flies and some lures. We find that many of our guests who arrive as spinners discover the pleasure of flyfishing, and encourage everyone to give it a try.
